The National Marine Park of Alonissos
is the first of its kind in Greece. Established for the protection and conservation of the local biodiversity it is currently the largest marine protected area in Europe and measuring more than 2.200 square km. The limited amount of human intervention has established a unique ecosystem with hundreds of plants and animals, as well as remarkable archaeological and historical monuments. The main protected species in the Agean sea is the endemic Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus). Of course, there are a lot more interesting marine species like the striped and the bottlenose dolphins.
